Slingerland Handwriting Program
We started our Slingerland learning to writing program this morning and it went well. The first lesson went a bit long, but the learners were very patience. I am happy to share that we officially learned our 1st lowercase letter h. The slingerland program teaches the lower case letters first. I plan to introduce/teach one letter each week in the beginning, and once the children understand the program, I will teach two letters per week. Also after we begin center time on Monday 10/7, I plan to do the slinglerand lesson with the kinders while the first graders have science and then switch groups. This will allow me to have a small group instruction time with each grade level when I introduce a new letter each week. Then I will do a practice/review session of the letters we have learned every Thursday. Slingerland is a wonderful multi-sensory handwriting program. I am excited to incorporate it into our curriculum this year.
Today we had an amazing lesson in the garden, and the children learned how to be “soil scientist.” Their assignment was to work in small groups and search for living and non-living items. Each group had an egg carton to collect their items. They also had magnifying glasses to look closely at what they found during their search. At the end of the lesson we came back together as a group and each learner then placed one item in the correct columns of Living vs Non-Living. Enjoy the attached photos from our time in the garden.
On Tuesday we began K/1 Specials which is the same program that was formerly called seminars. This year each child will rotate through all seven K-1 Specials. The K/1 Specials will each last four weeks and we will have seven sessions from now until June. The topics this year are: Mindfulness, Math in Art, Robotics, Handwork, Earth Science, Take a Part, and Archeology.
