Today we enjoyed our first art lesson. We read the wonderful book Beautiful Oops and talked about how there are no mistakes in art. We also read The Dot, a story about a girl who thinks she can’t draw, who after some encouragement from her art teacher starts putting dots on paper, and realizes she’s an artist. We then made our own versions of “dots” with pastel and/or paint, learning about how to take care of our art materials as we worked.
Another highlight of the day was reading A Frog Thing, a story about a little frog who really wants to learn how to fly and eventually does with the help of some bird friends. The learners drew a picture and wrote about things that they’d like to learn to do this year. There were wonderful answers such as “I want to learn to read so I can read a book to my new baby brother or sister” and “I want to learn to go across the monkey bars.”
